activism.live is a Mastodon instance operated by the Tangency Foundation as part of the ActivistHQ project. Mastodon is a decentralized social media platform that allows users to create and join communities around specific topics or interests. It offers a range of features similar to traditional social media platforms, but with a focus on privacy and security, and the ability for users to take control of their own data. The activism.live instance is a place for people interested in activism and social justice to connect and engage with others, share ideas and resources, and collaborate on projects. Whether you are a seasoned activist or just starting out, Activism.live and Mastodon offer a welcoming and supportive community for you to be a part of.
activism.live will eventually be a place where communities can come to work together on projects, mediate discussion, and ensure each others' safety. Not only that, but because it is based on the decentralized platform, we are able to develop unique tools to enable access to activism literacy resources like never before. Stay tuned to learn more about these as we begin the process of developing them for a hopeful mid 2023 launch!
What is Mastodon?
Mastodon is a decentralized social media platform that allows users to create and join communities around specific topics or interests. It offers a range of features similar to traditional social media platforms, such as the ability to post updates, share content, and interact with others. However, Mastodon is decentralized, which means that it is not owned or controlled by a single entity, but rather is made up of a network of independent servers or "instances" that are run by individuals or organizations. This decentralized structure allows Mastodon to offer greater privacy and control to its users, as well as the ability to create and join communities that align with their specific interests and values.
The Fediverse: A Network of Interconnected Mastodon Instances
Mastodon is part of the "fediverse," a network of interconnected instances that are based on the open-source software used by Mastodon: the ActivityPub protocol. The fediverse includes a wide variety of instances with different focuses, such as activism, art, technology, and more. Users of Mastodon can choose to join an instance that aligns with their interests and values, and can also interact with users on other instances within the fediverse. This decentralized structure allows for a diverse and vibrant community of users from around the world to connect and engage with each other.
